If there is only one mark it is doubtful that it is silver, it is probably silver plated or Britannia metal or pewter. But it is still possible to trace the manufacturer from the makers mark.

So, back to the weblink, if you click on one of the names then you will get a page showing all the marks for WM, I don't think any of them match yours but you should take a look.

I can't see an identical mark on this site......
ooops posted the same link....have you got into the pictures yet SB?
Will have another look around
If it isn't Sterling or Sheffield Plate then it may be quite obscure.

Sadly Phil is right SB but sometimes you can get silver with no marks at all....not often though.

I knew it wasn't solid silver, but I would like to know it's origin and age if possible. SB

I don't know much about canes but it looks nice.........hard to put an age on it as I have no experience of them. However that mark will be on the web somewhere so that will be a start...it will give you a time frame.I do know someone who will most likely know,if you email me some good pictures I will try to find out for you.

I think it looks more like a leaf than a shield.
The nearest shield shape would be the American US 66 shield.
If there's no other marks as has already been said it's unlikely to be silver, but either plate or Brittania, more likely plate, but still a nice example, we have several old canes in the shop similar to yours, the ones with animal heads are the most sought after, we sell them for about £25-40.
This may be it,scroll down to WM

Good find Denise, William Manton 1903 looks like the one to me, SB will have to confirm.
