So, lets now haul ourselves back 50 years to the 1888 era. Here is your next assignment, should you choose to accept... eight more pubs that wren't there in the 40s Map (I think)...

The only one I know for sure is the Spread Eagle in Spiceal St, where Woolworths was built...

But this is a bit of a mystery. In this pic of 1887 (only a year before the Map is dated) the pub the APPLE Tree can be clearly seen in DUDLEY STREET (Street sign confirms). If so, the pub on the opposite side is not named (with the big Pub Lamp outside, next to Satchwells shop), but appears to be where no 6 is on the map. But then the Acorn would not be marked on the map. Is it me? HELP!!!

I'm a bit busy this morning but I'll just suggest these three before I go out. No 1 the Criterion, No 2 The New Market Inn, No 3 the Turks Head (another one).

I don’t think the building with a lamp is a pub. Going from 1888 Kellys, Satchwells is at 62 Dudley St. On the opposite side of the road it says ”Kendalls late Keel Good hats”, and says that is opposite. The building with lamp is next to Satchwells and opposite, and nos 58-60 is Joseph Kendall, hatter. (Incidently the other side of Satchwells is Ezekial Holyhead, grocer, the last shop on that side of Dudley St). The c 1889 map shows where the apple Tree would be approx in green (for apples), and the building with advert for Kendalls in yellow. I would guess no 62 (Satchwells would be as marked. This is confirmed as you can see on map where Kings Head pub is and the name “..AD HOTEL” is on wall in picture. The 1988 directory does not give any nos between the Kings Head and the junction (agreeing with the map), but the 1884 directory lists no 63 , William Flavell, beer retailer. In the 1881 census it is run by George & harriet smith, and he is just described as a beerhouse keeper (no name), but McKenna confirms no 63 was the Aplple Tree, purchased by Ashtead brewery in 1881, wjich is not long before demolition

as you all know i m not a brummie myself (chester) but moved to the city in the 60s. are any of these old places left or have they all been demolished. if i were a citizen of birmingham i would be really annoyed that my city was being demolished without a trace of any of the old places. other towns and cities leave some of their history, shrewsbury has an old building dating 1600s, apart from a lot of the old shuts and fish alley, which is a very old cobbled street still with the same shops. birmingham council have a lot to answer for.

Of the two lists I don't think any of the pubs are left. The Royal George was rebuilt a couple of times, but the last I heard of it was closed. The Talbot was replaced by a new pub but that has been renamed a couple of time, it's called The Bull Ring Tavern at the moment, but I don't know how long that will last because I've heard that a mate of mine that has owned it for the last ten years has just sold it and I don't think the new owners want it for a pub.

Great, thanks Mike, most useful. Now, another query for your, or anyone else's, mapping and detective skills. This photo was posted on another Planet (I can't remember which Galaxy just now), but the caption (presumably added by the postee) said it was "Cattle and Pig Market, Montague Street". This didn't make sense to me, for although there is a Montague Street near Town, I have never heard or read that it had a Market therein? Any ideas? Is it me?
