I am always amazed at how many cinemas there were considering the size of them. When you think how many there must have been around the country it must have gone into thousands. Of course there were no Tellys so people went to see the News especially with the war going on. SB

I have been asked by our new member Golden for information on The Grove Cinema Handsworth. First of all let me welcome you to the forum, I hope you will enjoy your time here.
The Grove cinema at 473 Dudley Rd Winson Green opened on the 22nd of August 1932. It closed on the 24th of October 1981. I'm sorry thats all the information I have, but I do have a couple of photos.

The Kingston Cinema opened August 4th 1935 with the film "Ruggles of Red Gap" starring Charles Laughton. Seating capacity was 1475, its final performance was "Prudence & the Pill" starring David Niven & Deborah Kerr on December 14th 1968. For many years after that date it served as a Ladbrooks Bingo Hall and then later as an Asian Conference Centre, but was finally demolished a couple of years back.
