Thanks Phil,
I didn't know it was called the Regent and it looks a more substantial cinema than I remember, the photo may be before my time and it was very run down when we were kids.
Coming back to the Lyric, and after some thought compearing it with my memories of the other local cinema's like The Grove on the Dudley rd, Smethwick, the Piccadilly Soho Rd Hockley, The ABC on the top end Monument Rd, and the junction of the Hagley Rd, The old Lyric was quite a nice place, the lay out inside on comparison was grander and was more like a theater in design with more curtains and chintz.
You still came out scratching.

The Lyric first opened as a Cinema in 1910 it was then known as The Queens Picture House. Before that it had been a theatre known as The Queens Theatre and previous to that it was the Church of Christ the Saviour and it was built in 1847.

No wonder I always thought it looked like a church.

I have a library of books on Birmingham covering a lot of subjects and I am always adding to it. When I had to stop drinking I had to find another interest or else I would have gone nuts. I've always been interested in history so the history of Birmingham was my first choice.

You have made a great start there, and I hope that you won't mind if I add some more.
I think that over the years we have had in excess of a 150 cinemas in Birmingham. Some did not last long some closed and reopened with new names. I will try to list them all here. Some of them may already have been mentioned, some will get two mentions because of different names at different times. I have tried work around those already posted.

If I make a mistake please, let me know and I will alter it, if i miss one once again please let me know.

It was either, stop drinking, smoking, and working a minimum of 12 hours a day 7 days a week or die. After I had watched all my aunts & uncles who I had lived with most of my life all die before reaching 60. I decided this way was best.

All the same I'm not quite sure what it is called now. The oldest Cinema in the country.

The Electric Cinema was once one of more than 100 movie theaters in the industrial city of Birmingham, but today it's the only independent cinema left.

The Electric Cinema is a landmark at 47-49 Station St., yet its plain white façade doesn’t reveal the cinematic excitement inside.
Britain’s oldest movie theater has been updated with plush seats and sofas in the back of each of its two theaters.
Theatergoers can settle into the sofas and text their orders for snacks and drinks to the wait staff, who’ll deliver the goods sofaside.
The Electric Cinema has the original screening space, which has a 35 mm projector. Upstairs, a second screen was added in 1980, and it has been updated for digital HD with Dolby surround sound.

As I said when I started the list, I was going to list every cinema in Brum, because some had closed and reopened under new names some might get more than one mention.

I think there might be some more among those I have listed so far that are mentioned more than once. There certainly will be before I end the list.
