Lost Cinemas of Brum

I thought it may be interesting to do a survey on the lost Cinemas of Brum.
Just to kick off I used to go to the TIVOLI Coventry Rd Yardley in the 60s, disapeared when the Swan shopping Centre was built. SB I will keep count.

I remember as I think Phil will also the Waldorf Walford Road nearby to the Piccadily on Stratford Road

I have noted the Waldorf and the Piccadilly. The Piccadilly was an Asian Cinema until recently. it is now called the Oval and I think it's a function suite. SB

Yes I remember them both very well, mind more often than not I went to the Moseley as it was cheaper.

Phil the Moseley is that still in existance ?

I had some wonderful times in the Lyric Cinema, it stood on the corner of Edward St, and Louisa St, off The Parade. God it takes me back. The films on a Saturday afternoon matinee known as the threepenny crush. Little curly blonde headed Tarzan boy, Bomba and the original serial of Batman that always seemed to have a trap door in the floor full of snapping crocodiles. Had my first kiss and my first head of lice.

The Moseley along with one of my old locals went years ago. At the start of the 70's I believe. It was only a couple of years back that after getting on for 40 years that they built on the site. I didn't much miss the Moseley but the Belgrave was a good pub.

The Lyric a beautiful old building, it always reminds me of a church.

I also remember the Mosley almost on the corner of Belgrave Road don't laugh I wasn't allowed to go there in case I came out with more than I went in with! further along the Mosely Road heading toward town was the Alambra opposite Hawleys Bakery another name from the past but if you went in the opposite direction there was the Imperial and further into Kings Heath the Kingsway.

I know what you mean about the Moseley, but you knew my family. We had probably got anything that you could get in there. I don't suppose you ever went next door to the tobacconist and bought any of the long Joystick cigarettes to smoke in there either.

What year did you move out of Larches St, would it have been about the same time as my Nan's house was demolished 71-72?

Your Nan was lovely, I moved out in 68 I did get ciggies from the I think it was called the Black Magic by the Waldorf I think the ciggies were called Pallette they were all different colours with a gold tip

I remember the shop you mean wasn't it a milk bar as well or was that a different one. We lads couldn't smoke those pastel coloured cigarettes. It was Capstan full strength for us.

Thats the one it was a milk bar, my dad always smoked Capstan full strength, still have a packet that were dads and his lighter

Phil, do you have a picture of the Ledsum cinema in Ledsum St. of Monument Rd, it was widely known as the Flea Pit. It had concrete steps with cushions on, thinking about it it must have been a bit of a home made enterprise it was very basic,
