SB

Quality will always reveal itself in the end.

Lynn

Another Holders photo for you, this one is of the original concert rooms & the Rodney Inn next door that were both owned by Holders. This is a very old photo and was taken in 1857.

SB,

Just for you,

John Charles Holder started a Brewery (The Midland Brewery) in Novia Scotia Street in 1872 (it’s at the back of the New Science Museum). He branched out into pubs & a music hall. The Black Horse Aston, The Craven Arms Upper Gough St, and The Rodney being a few of them. He was bought out by Mitchells & Butlers in 1919.

Thank-you all for all of this. May I ask - do you have the dates for the group of four photographs.

Lynn.

Lynn

I'm afraid that I have no knowledge of the dates, the Gaiety Theatre one would have to be between 1897 & 1920 after it was renamed. It looks to be very early in the 20th Century and I would think it before WWI. The three of the cinema I would think not long before it closed in 1969 because the last time I was in there was in 1968 and it looked very much as it does in the photos.

Lynn

As I told you I have a large collection of books on Birmingham since you came on the forum I have looked out one called "Ring Down the Curtain" by Derek Salberg". Its about the history of the theatre & music halls in Birmingham. There are a couple of pages on the Holders Concert Rooms Coleshill St. I hope that he doesn't mind of I reproduce the section here and sue me for Copyright infringement, but hopefully as he is getting acknowledged and a free advert for a most excellent book he may forgive me.

I must say that I am finding all this stuff about Holders and the associated subjects most interesting, not least because all of this information is completely new to me.
It also highlights how lucky we are to have Phil's photo library at hand, even if Phil does come as part of the package.[Silly Grin]
