Campaign to Bring Back King Kong

For some time there has been a growing call to return the statue of King Kong to his rightful home Birmingham, I noted this story in this evenings Birmingham Mail.

What in Gods name do we want that horrible Plastic Puppet back in Brum for.

You can look around Birmingham and see some of the monstrosities that are supposed to be buildings that surround us and can say that. At least King Kong is supposed to be a monster.

Has anyone worked out what the Iron man in Victoria Square is all about. Just compare that quality with Murdoch Boulton and Watt

You may laugh, but didn't Birmingham Council want to put Murdoch, Boulton & Watt (the wallpaperers) somewhere else out of public view. They only put it back in its old position after an argument ans coming up with every excuse they could not to put it in Centenary Square.

Can anybody tell me why Birmingham is ashamed of its Industrial Heritage?

Phil I'm not sure that Birmingham is ashamed of it's industrial Heritage. What I do think is that the people who are involved don't know or care about it.
A couple of years ago we held a public meeting involving planning some new houses in our area, Unusually the Architect turned up and she was Spanish.

What I have noticed lately that any person in this country that has any upper echelon job to to with this country concerning its heritage, history, archaeology or similar are mostly foreign. It also runs into the medical profession and those running our theatres. Where are all the English people?

Talking of dumb....I'm English, yes Mr Yank, ENGLISH, not a UK citizen.
I am also from Birmingham and I remember the King Kong statute very well, first it was in town then later on, when I was working from Handsworth electrician, I used to pass it quite often in a car sales yard in Aston.

Please don't bring it back. It doesn't represent anything in my view.
It's rubbish. Manzoni gardens were rubbish, The Bull Ring of the seventies was rubbish.
I don't like the replacement area but I certainly don't wish to be reminded of this grotty recent past.

All my views are my own and people may be free to disagree.

Obviously the 60's Bull Ring was not your playground, nobody is saying it was a work of art but it could be a wonderful place for a teenager. I knew every square inch of it, and Manzoni Gardens was where I slept during the day after spending most of the night in a night club and the rest in an all night café.

My waking hours were spend strolling round the courts of the Bull Ring Centre or chatting Woolworth girls up, Woolworth's was the place where I had my bacon sandwich or toast for breakfast. The girls in the self service restaurant always made sure we had that little bit extra of everything.

I Loved the place and was sorry to see it go, a lot of my teenage memories went with it.

As for King Kong it was later than my time because he first showed his face in the 70's when I was a happily married man with children, but after all he was only a bit of fun, something that Birmingham lacks drastically these days. You really would be surprised how many people that remember him would like to see him back, but I don't think it will happen.
