It was Phil same thing I think. I was never in the world a Skinhead but I had a pair of Doc Martens Shoes and they were like walking on air. SB

Were they aniseed, they were foul little things. I often wonder at some of the things we used to eat. Concrete Pudding must have been the worst.

I thought that's what you did with it? Hit someone on the head with it and it killed them and broke it up small enough to eat.
Remember the other one rice and a spoonful of jam, you stirred it round and round on the plate until it was all pink, and then if you liked rice you ate it.

Regarding products we remember. In the Great Western Arcade (The one in Colmore Row opposite Snow Hill railway Station), there is a sweet shop that specialises in the old time sweets. Its amazing to see how many are still available that we thought had disapeared in the mists of time. They are of course not at the old prices but still quite reasonable considering todays market and business costs.

You can't be talking about Maynard's can you, they are surely not still there after all these years. I used to try not to go through that Arcade as there were two shops my wife always headed for one was Rhodes the China Shop. That was a minimum spend of £30 to £50. In the 70's I'm talking.
The others was a ladies dress shop, and we were talking unlimited in there. I used to have to drag her out of there screaming. She always quietened down after a coffee in Greys and another purchase or two the ladies department.

Sorry I can't remember the name of the shop, it has only been there maybe a year or so. But its very good.

There's lots of these old time sweet shops opening up lately.
There's one in Bromsgrove, one by Canterbury cathedral, and we have 3 in Brighton, all quite exspensive if you try and buy in the old weights.
I was horrified when visiting some town or other last summer whilst in the local shopping mall. I saw one of these stall that sell all the old fashioned sweets, where you can pick & mix them yourself.
I was horrified when I took them to be weighed and he charged me in excess of £6.50. There was hardly equivalent to the sweet ration you got prior to 1953 in the bag.
