As many buildings are made to very old designs these days or frontages kept to face new buildings, I'm surprised old cobbled streets arn't uncovered these days or in fact new ones laid. SB

Have you ever rode a bike on a cobbled road?

I'd have liked to have seen you trying to ride a bicycle on the pavements when stone sets (cobbles to you) were in vogue. The local plod would have been clouting your ear all the way to the nick.

I know I would rather have safer streets than extended human rights. We knew our human rights back then, they included you behaved yourself, you didn't break the law. you treated your elders with respect. If you didn't then you made sure you didn't get caught because if you did you knew what to expect.

They were safer times though Phil, we didn't realise how good it was then did we.

Does anyone know what this was?

There is an article in this Octobers Brummagem mag with a photo of it when it was complete. I've been passing it almost daily for over 40 years and never knew this existed.

If you mean the Brick building with the pointed roof. That I think was a snooker hall. If you mention the ruin next to it I hav'nt a clue. SB

It was a Cinema.
The ERA or the Elite Picture Playhouse, the name isn't clear because the article uses both names..
Where the trees are growing was the main entrance. Google ariel view shows it has no roof and is jammed full of old cars
I suppose I can scan the photo from the mag can't I, that's probably what Carl Chinn expects us to do.

Now lets see if I can get this right, The Elite Cinema was on the corner of Crown Rd & Bordesley Green it opened in 1913 and was closed by bombing in 1940. The Era was on the corner of Churchill Rd & Bordesly Green opened in 1914 and closed 1959. The one on Google is The Elite.

There you go then, the Elite cinema, forgotten all about that.
I used to go out with an usherette at the Era, funny place the balcony was two steps higher than the foyer.

Well done Phil, I knew you would illuminate this for me, I like the pic of the partly derelict but still complete building.
In fact this makes it clear to me now that the picture in the magazine is not the Elite but the Era which isn't even mentioned in the artical, only under the pic.
It looks a similar aspect and with a little modification would have accounted for front of the billiard hall, well it had me fooled anyway.
Thank you
VM

Don't know if anyone has seen this map before, some of the streets seem slightly misplaced to me, but it was early days.
You can increase this map without loss of definition.
What makes it look odd, is that north is in the top right corner approx.

It looks like the streets got knocked about over the years. A process that is still underway today.
