I didn't use all of these places but I do remember them all. Especially Woolies probably the only shop I could afford.

It probably did not help Dewhurst's survival that they set half there meat out in many of their branches on open tables in front of the store with flies settling on it and with the sun beating down on it , keeping the bugs nice and warm in the meat

I don't think it mattered back then, those were the days when meat was cooked properly, bugs and all.
These days of cooking beef until it is barely warm and roasting lamb by candlelight doesn't allow such exposure to bugs.

Iceland at the Yew Tree, Yardley used to be a Fine Fare in the 60's - I remember mom used to take me shopping there.

Freeman, Hardy and Willis was a great shoe shop catering for all shoe sizes. I could even get ladies size 2 which was a blessing as not everyone did the smaller sizes.

I remember woolworth's sixpenny counter ,nothing on that counter was more than 6 old pence .Mom use to shop at george masons and wrensons our butcher was dewhurst,but sadly all gone now,no more cardboard boxes for bonfire night .

same here jo..wrensons and george masons for our mom...shame we dont get those type of shops anymore..i also recall mom getting our dads chittlings and tripe and pigs trotters from the lozells road but cant recall the name of the shop now
