ok then...then smokers have been turfed out of pubs thus one would think would bring the non smokers into them in droves...so why is it they are still closing at a rate of knots..could it be the cheap booze in supermarkets so folk are just not going out to have a drink...now dont get me wrong i love to go out on special occasions and have a meal out but to be honest i reckon we are turning into a nation of idle so and sos who cant be bothered to cook at home and it would be nice to go into the odd pub without having menus shoved in me face or stuck on every table in the pub and another thing maybe i dont like the smell of cooking wafting around in the pubs...dont seem natural to me but there again im old fashioned and think pubs should be for socialising...guess its just the way of the world now and i do have a small list of pubs that i can go in and feel at ease in so im happy with that...i just avoid all the others....

Can think of worse things in your pie & mash. Have i told you the story about the bar in leeds with the 50-60 year old topless waitress where certain items dangled over the customers beer as she brought it to the table, on one occasioon actually breaking the surface ?

SB & Volty

You are totally missing the point, there would be no need for any non smokers to enter a smokers only pub unless they wanted to. I think you would find quite a few of those. As obviously smokers are more willing to give a little leeway and obviously enjoy the environment of a happy public house more than those who don't. In fact how many other pubs would close down were it not for those who are willing to stand outside when they have a cigarette. In fact just look at the great expense some pubs have gone to just to make their smokers more comfortable outside. Left to the non smokers. how long would it be before pubs became a thing of the past.

Phil, decent pubs are few and far between as it is. If some were made smoking pubs and some none smoking, for one section or the the other people would have to travel farther. Another thing to remember is that its not only illegal to smoke in pubs, it is illegal to smoke in someone elses workplace. It makes no odds if the bar staff are smokers or not. For example if you were a smoker and you had a home help or a social worker come to your house they can insist that you don't smoke as your house is their workplace.

SB

My point is that no matter where the pub was if smoking was allowed the punters would travel to it, obviously legislation would have to be changed to exempt these pubs from the law as it stands now, but there is no fear of it happening because the close down of the non smoking pubs would sound like machine gun fire with all the closing doors.

As for someone trying to lay the law down in my house about what I can and cannot do, well I'm afraid they would soon be shown the door no matter what they were there for. Nobody who lives in my house or that visits it smokes, but if somebody said that I couldn't then I would light up my first one since July 2004.

Phil in my opinion (and others) the main reason is the price. I was in the Trocadero in the City centre yesterday. Two pints of Carling Black label lager cost £6.00. the average bloke with a wife and a couple of kids coudn't justify spending cash like that. With tax etc, and probably a taxi home regular drinking is too expensive. Todays wages are not relative to cost of 20 years ago. I was also amazed to see cigarettes at over £8 for twenty.
Pubs have been shutting at a regular rate because of :
A: Smuggling
B: Price
C: Supermarkets and cheap corner shops.
D: Apathy - simple if you don't use it you'll lose it.
It's not only pubs that have been closing look at many High street shops. Many are closed due to the Internet, most are closed due to the big greedy supermarkets which are still growing. Many newsagents have closed for example and they actually sold cigaretts. also the mercenary way these supermarkets demand price cuts from their suppliers is actually closing factories. None of this is due to any smoking bans. But just wait for phase two, there will probable be drinking bans soon leaving us with a chain of restaurants. But with the Horse ban they will probably ban food.
