yes it took a lot to close schools back in the day...these days we have 1 inch of snow and the country comes to a grinding halt...just hope they are prepared for this little lot if it happens...they have had enough warning..
The winter of 47 was really bad ,remember walking to school ,they reckon we had 6 foot of snow that winter ,it was piled so high i could'nt see over the top when on the pavement ,but the school still opened, and the milk and bread was still delivered, the horse and cart was left on the main road's and the stuff was carried down the side road's,that would'nt happen today.

how right you are jo..i have read up a lot on the 47 winter...i remember the one of 62...we opened our front door and was met with a wall of snow from the drifts had to batter our way out..makes me think now how we got through it...just the coal fire downstairs in the front room...could not often afford coal to light the back room...no duvets back then..no carpet on the bedroom floors just lino..badly fitted windows..burst pipes in the kitchen...
Yes lyn it was a bad one,in 47 our mom put dad's old army great coat on our bed to help keep us warm ,and we all had our own stone hot water bottle, happy day's

ive heard of using the old army coats many times jo...have to say they may have been tough days but happy days for us kids....of course it would have been our parents who had all the stresses of keeping us warm and fed..something i dont think we really realise until we are grown up ourselves...i have a lot to thank our mom and dad for thats for sure..
Same here lyn ,came home early from school one day ,saw mom wiping gravy on a plate ,when it came to dinner time she said, I had mine earlier, told dad what I saw ,he had a talk to mom about it ,but I copped it in the neck of her .After that we all sat down to dinner together every night.
Definatly ,they are wrong more than they are right lately ,forcast heavy rain for us this afternoon ,it was a sunny nice one, wrong again, jan cussed as she had washing to peg out.but said she would do it in the morning.
