Perhaps not as cold as our summer.

I remember in the Sixties Big Freeze as it was called, walking to school and my feet were so cold it was painful.

yes it took a lot to close schools back in the day...these days we have 1 inch of snow and the country comes to a grinding halt...just hope they are prepared for this little lot if it happens...they have had enough warning..

The winter of 47 was really bad ,remember walking to school ,they reckon we had 6 foot of snow that winter ,it was piled so high i could'nt see over the top when on the pavement ,but the school still opened, and the milk and bread was still delivered, the horse and cart was left on the main road's and the stuff was carried down the side road's,that would'nt happen today.

how right you are jo..i have read up a lot on the 47 winter...i remember the one of 62...we opened our front door and was met with a wall of snow from the drifts had to batter our way out..makes me think now how we got through it...just the coal fire downstairs in the front room...could not often afford coal to light the back room...no duvets back then..no carpet on the bedroom floors just lino..badly fitted windows..burst pipes in the kitchen...

ive heard of using the old army coats many times jo...have to say they may have been tough days but happy days for us kids....of course it would have been our parents who had all the stresses of keeping us warm and fed..something i dont think we really realise until we are grown up ourselves...i have a lot to thank our mom and dad for thats for sure..
