John
Thats very true, but wouldn't they have been smaller and much more unobtrusive. Didn't watch repairers put them on the inside of the case. I know on my Waltham pocket watch there are a few inside the case.
On my wanderings through the Bull Ring on my way to work, I usually have a look at the Antique Fair when I come across it. As I have posted before I collect old tools. This is something I have never seen before a Hand Rebate Plane this is used in much the same way as a Spokeshave. This interesting little item cost £5.00 not a bad price considering it is still a functioning piece of equipment. It's got a cast iron body, Brass fittings, and wooden handles (not plastic) looked after it will still be usable when I am long gone.

SB, Worth £20 of anyones money, the trouble with these things now is that not many people know how to use them. Sharpen that blade, bit of oil on the thread, and a wipe over the wood with linseed, as good as new.
I will clean it up I havn't had a chance yet but iv'e got a bit of time off coming up. Everything works freely, no rust, just honest old dirt. as Denise asked any idea's as to it's age please.
In case anyone points out that all planes should lie on their side to protect the blade. The blade actually is up inside the body when not in use.

Forgot to point out SB , it's called a routing plane, here's one made in 1884, so I would imagine yours is older, the famous model was the STANLEY 71. Is there any name on it or marks ?

Thanks John I'll have a good look for marks tonight. That's a nice one that you have. I wonder if they originally had a set of different shaped blades, ?

SB, it's not mine just took it off the internet to show you comparison. I do know that you could interchange blades of various widths, as they were mainly used for grooving.
