Driverless Cars

#1 by Sheldonboy , Wed Jul 30, 2014 11:14 am

These things sound dangerous.
Can they be any more dangerous than stolen cars, cars driven by drunks, people who can't admit that their vision isn't so good, drivers on the phone, putting the make up on. all these kinds of people have killed many other people.

The person in charge of the vehicle is always responsible for it, that doesn't necessarily mean you have to be driving it at the time.
They would probably have to change the law though, there are so many possible loopholes, like the one about getting in your car drunk and having it take you home.
The fact that it would normally be bouncing off parked cars for the whole journey anyway will disguise the fact that the person in charge is drunk.

What if a drunk driver gets in a 'driverless car'? Would that be a mitigating circumstance? Some of these cars apparently have no steering wheel or pedals, so there isn't (technically) ANYONE in charge of them.

According to the papers at present driverless cars are illegal, probably for the reasons already stated, and a change in the law would be necessary. Knowing insurance companies I would think that, initially at least, insurance for these would be so high that no-one would want to own one

I hope you're right Mike. There is more to driving than GPS and Sensors.

Don't you have to learn to do your make up in the mirrors and be able to text with one hand.

A woman got four years last week for stealing money from the NHS, who just let her do it.
There is no balance in sentencing anymore. The judges are too old and don't live in the real world.

One thing is for sure, usually the punishment doesn't fit the crime. The Judiciary not helped by the fact that there are very few prison places. Still we can always tag murderers, rapists. muggers, con men, child molesters, drunk drivers, politicians, TV stars etc etc............................Can't we.

The tag should weigh as much as the person wearing it and require surgery to remove it.

Computers don't have anything to lose and they don't feel pain. The software writers are safe at home while cars driving themselves are free to kill.

"Tesla in fatal California crash was on Autopilot"

There's nothing wrong with electric cars if they are in the hands of someone who can drive but I see no reason to hand over control to the car.

I agree, but people are stupid, otherwise they would not hand over control to a tory government
