John

I suppose this are the main Parks Dept spends most of its budget on. I tell you what would be a good investment at Cannon Hill park anyway and that would be extending the car park. Because you only have to see a glimmer of sun and you can't get on the car park. They have plenty of land at the back of the park . All they need to do is lay that netting that stops the field turning into a bog if you park on it.

When I was a kid and growing up in Nechells this was my nearest park. It was on Vauxhall road next to what was the Co-op Dairy and now is the home of The Central Fire Station. Admittedly this is a little earlier than my time, but only 30 years or so. The play equipment was still the same, but the ground was covered with black ash. Not a very good idea in a neighbourhood that had no bathrooms.

This new Park story has appeared again this time in the Birmingham mail. This is a letter I have just emailed to The Birmingham Mail.
Dear Sir/ Madam
I read with interest your story, (Mail 18/3/13 page 11). Birmingham opens first new park in 130 years. This is incorrect. I remember around 1960 A new park opened in Yardley. This was Kents Moat Park. Before this it was rough ground, no fences not even a swing or a footpath.
The "NEW" Kents Moat Park was built with Tennis Courts, Swings etc, football pitches with changing rooms etc etc. The park was opened By Alderman Frank Price then the Chair of the Parks Department. I assure you I am less than 130 years of age.
Maybe the City Council Didn't know about this wonderful new park that they had designed, built and financed. No wonder the present council is in such a mess. xxxxxx xxxxxxx city resident Sheldonboy

I am sure I am right about this. Probably Kents moat park isn't the only other new one.

SB, you should not lie about your age no matter how carried away you get.

Is this Kents Moat Park you speak of the one I would call Poolway Park and is also known as Kents Moat Recreation Ground?

What is the difference between a Park and a Recreation Ground and is this the reason it doesn't count?

But it wasn't laid out as new then. But I see what you mean

It's as simple as this we have a new Council and they want to be seen doing something different something that no other Council has done. So we have a little semantics, wordplay and the juggling of figures and dates.

The first new supermarket to be built over a road and a park/recreation ground in Yardley, probably since the beginning of time, was opened last year. Perhaps the parks department should add that to their list of boasts.

T wonder what Birmingham Councils definition of a "park" is. I came across this today when I was searching Google foe something else, Its the corner of Couchman Rd & Clodshall Rd. The last time I was down that way I'm sure it was houses and I don't think that was anything like a 130 years ago.

It has a bench and a kids playground, a path and some trees. Looks like a park to me.

Phil, how did you get that picture off Google?
I used to be able to print to file in Windows but now I'm on a Mac I haven't quite found a method of doing it.
