New Library Website

#1 by astoness , Thu Nov 21, 2013 12:22 pm

i dont know much if anything about websites and their costs but this amount seems over the top to me...how much more money will the tax payer have to fork out for what i consider an awful building with sub standard services...i speak from experience as i have visited the archives dept and and service was just awful with many of the archives still locked away and not yet ready for public viewing...dont know if things have changed in the past 4 weeks since i was there but they were not even ready to lend out books...

You can't really complain if there are no books to borrow in the new public lending library. And the archives are obviously locked away for their own protection.
That isn't what the library is about, it is about being a Birmingham landmark, and a darned pretty one at that.

no volty you have it all wrong...unless like me you have been visiting the library for years to research the history of brum and also do family ancestry work..look for old photos..etc you have no idea of just how much material has always been available in the past and at the moment because they cant get their act together for the public there is such a lot that we cant at the moment access....yes certain archive material is locked away but on request we can look at it...this is not the case at this present time...absolutely disgraceful considering how much it cost to build the eye sore...

I see my sarcasm is wasted here.

so moving on...

The cost of a web site is about twenty quid. The ongoing costs vary but could be a couple of hundred pounds a year to get it hosted, unless you know someone in the council or some other big public body that already has a web presence, then you could just get it put on their servers for free.

The real costs are for manpower to create the pages and scripts and content that will feature in your nice shiny website.
If it is just a list of books then you wouldn't think it would cost much and any decent typist could bang it in in a few weeks.
If it is highly graphical with masses of useful content such as readable books, searchable archives and up to date literary interests then it could consume thousands of man hours of labour. Scanning of files and books etc is a very time consuming job.

So which sort is it?
My experience of library websites leads me to thinking it will be a useless list of what the library holds with no active content.

Perhaps I went too far when I described the second most beautiful building in Birmingham as "Pretty"
Clearly it isn't a patch on the old library in the looks department, but it has to be said that it promises to be most pleasant on the eye.
I can't wait until they take all that funny looking scaffolding down and we get a proper look at it.

The lady appears to be so beside herself over my earlier remarks that she has resorted to over quoting herself.

volty i just noticed that i had done that..you will have to excuse me but i do take this subject seriously...the previous library reminded me of a multi storey car park..it was smelly and had more leaks than you would find in the whole of wales...its no secret that i hate this new one not least for its location but i thought hey ho its here now and what really counts is whats inside and the so long as the service is good i can live with it...trouble is the service is dire to the point its even worse than before..when i visited a few weeks back i had cause to complain about more than one thing...i wont go into detail but a member of staff actually asked me to write in and complain because even the staff were not happy about the way the library is now being run...that tells me all i need to know..
love your remark about the funny looking scaff..

Where is this then Slow Jo?

If you are in Birmingham then the pile of bean cans in town is your library too.
