Gem Street, Gosta Green

I'm posting these few photos for tca, I'm afraid that two of them concentrate on the School and Church which I suppose was the main feature of the street. There is one other showing a back court, which I find interesting as it shows the abject poverty that some families were still living in less than a hundred years ago in Birmingham and still were some 40 years later until the whole area was cleared.

I often go on about the planners ruining Birmingham, but there are parts of Birmingham that needed flattening, but even after saying that, there were some parts that could have been saved. Just around the corner from Gem Street was Lawrence Street with some good quality 3 bedroom houses. On Ashted Row there were many 3 story Georgian type houses, these could have been renovated and saved, Why not, could it be they stood in the way of the University expansion?

Not my area but an interesting thread Phil.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity,
and I'm not sure about the former.
