I can tell you that the pub that stands there today is not the original one. The modern one was built by Ansell's in 1930, so is not as old as it looks. Here is a photo of the previous one on the site, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was another before that as some of these suburban roadhouses can go back a long way. I will try to find out for you.

All I have been able to find out is a mention of the Tyburn House in the Trial of Abraham Thornton for the murder of Mary Ashford after a dance at the Tyburn House in 1817. It seems it was probably built sometime soon after a tollgate was installed on Chester Rd in 1759.
If Mike looks in on this he will more than likely be able to sort you a more exact date out.

Many thanks Phil. I thought it was quite old but I hadn't really got a clue. If there was a Tollgate there The Chester Road was a private road iItake it then. I don't know much about these things i will admit. SB

Maybe you can tell me why this pub The New Inns at Yardley was demolished, replaced with a temporary pub for years and then finally replaced with a pub that is no better than the temporary one.
Mind you me and my mate Alf used the temporary one often on a Saturday when we picked his kids up from his ex outside the Swan.

Sorry phil, I only remember going in the New Inns a couple of times in my life. Maybe trade dropped originally due to the Swan just up the road, and then built up a bit after the Swan went. I don't really know sorry pal. Maybe Voltman may know, he's no stranger to pubs. He taught me all I know. SB
If this was the best I could do. It wasn't good enough

Actually SB you taught me to drink so I am humbled in your presence.
It looks to me as though the old New Inns overhung the pavement so far that it would have had to go even if they hadn't widened the road at that point to make way for the Swan island.

Phil,
I was a barmen in the New inns pre-fabricated version in about1966 for a couple of years, Geoff. and Iris Tedder were the managers.
John
Do you know why it took them so long to rebuild the pub?

Phil,
I've no idea, it was a thriving little pub as it was, albeit a bit austere decor wise.

Just for you a photo of the interior when it was just a temporary building.

Another couple of local pubs in the Sheldon area. I never used either of them so I have no comments to make.

Phil , that New Inns pic brings back memories.
I ,went in the Dovecote once, can't remember a thing about it I only had one pint with a mate of mine Les Davies.

As I say I never used either, but I heard that the Lea Tavern had a bit of a reputation for being a bit of a rough house. There again if you listened to the local folk lore about any pub nobody would ever use them.
