Australian media tried to gang up on Rebel Wilson to make sure she didn't set a precedent for large payouts when the media makes up stories about people.
The greedy fat pigs (Australian media) reason for the appeal .... "They had argued that the size of the payout could prevent journalism that is in the public interest."
Or to put it in normal speak, the media won't be able to afford to lie about people, even if they think it is in the "public interest".
The answer is simple. Don't fine newspapers, imprison their editors for allowing lies to go into print. If they are not sure of their facts then don't print them.
It's a common tactic to print lies and then apologise, but by then the damage is done. There needs to be a real deterrent to media attempts to destroy peoples lives.

I would agree providing that every politician had the same treatment.

She nearly got her money.
The real implication here is that the papers can say what they like because they can still afford to.

I gather the reason it was cut was because she could not prove that she had made the losses she claimed due to the vilification. While not arguing with your comment, she seems to have had a very high opinion of what she was worth, which, from seeing her on TV shows (do not often go to cinema), was greatly exagerated
