Pretty amazing, and as they say, wonderful examples of good british workmanship. Not so spectacular , but still surprising, on a recent tiime team program , parts of a giant flamethrower from WW1 were excavated from a collapsed trench. the metal looked as new after the dirt was washed off, and you could see a valve still closed when turned
As you say Mike, good British workmanship. i am sure it's still there in places but but be getting fairly scarce with the lack of apprenticeships. The old guys with the tricks of the trade and years of experience are fast disappearing I think.
Half our life is spent trying to find something to do with the time we have spent most of life trying to save. http://brummiestalking.org.uk/
Moreover in this case a great bit of Brummie workmanship as the browning machine gun was produced at the BSA.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
