From what I read this is equally the blame of Basildon Council as it is the travellers. I didn't realise that this was a legal site that had been granted planning permission years ago. The problem seems to be with that there are 14 families that have taken up residence without permission.
The point is the council should have acted as this happened and not years later at a cost of £22 million. The sheer fact that it has cost the local ratepayer that much money is sickening.

The tv were saying they had permission for something like 35 sites, looks a lot more than 14 extra to me.
Well (according to them) they are all family. So 3 or 4 caravans could be the same family. Or this will be what they are claiming, but that is no matter if there is a restriction on the number of vans that are allowed to be there. The thing is the local council should have acted as soon as the first van showed up there. I doubt that they all arrived on the same day.

I was under the impression that there is a legal site and that along side it someone bought the land and moved in on that. Then they started building on it without planning permission.
Any any case they have no sympathy from me.
There is a static "traveller" on the radio news saying it is "the beginning of the end for travellers". Well that can't be a bad thing.

Volty
I have no sympathy at all with travellers, I have been employed to clear up the filth and mess that they leave behind wherever they go. I could never understand why they are not just removed on the same day that they stop anywhere. There are legal sites up and down the country that they wont use simply because they have to pay.
If the law says that they cant be moved on without a court order, then change the law its been going on for long enough now for them to do it.

A quote from the BBC website...
"The eviction, which could cost up to £18m, marks the end of a 10-year battle between travellers, who bought a former scrap yard on green belt land in 2001 and established their caravans there. More travellers joined them and some semi-permanent chalet dwellings were built."

Set fire to all of them, nothing but rogues and thieves, with no regard for anyone or anything other than themselves, scumbags.
Very well put, unfortunately, according to the law, we have to allow people like this to ride roughshod over the law.

Volty, then why not change the law, comes back to this stupid issue of human rights, this country never ceases to amaze me.
Hopefully the EU will fall apart and Johhny Foreigners stupid laws will go with it.

Well they (supposed travellers) have mustered their combined intelligence and decided to protest by all walking off site.
Oh! How upset must the bailiffs be now?

I tell you what ticks me off about this sort of thing. Its not the gypo's you can understand and expect this sort of thing from them. It's the outsiders who get involved, people who do not have the faintest idea what these travellers get up to, the ones who still have silly romanticised ideas of them going from town to town mending pots and pans and sharpening knives.
