I find the best place to discover Earwigs is in the base of lamp-posts.
I once disturbed a massive nest, in one at the Chestnut Tree as it happens, and there were thousands of them. A very social insect I would say.
Completely harmless, like pretty much all of our insects. I am nothing like so brave when abroad though.

I once had an incredible itching between my toes. When I was in a position to get my sock off, out popped an Earwig. Iv'e never liked the little divils since. SB

Small insects with large biting apparatus rarely have the power to noticeably bite us, we are a bit too tough.
Spiders can be seen to try but an adults skin is just too thick for them to do any damage. Ants on the other hand have no problem at all.

They are alright until you go camping and they crawl into your ears at night.
I used to always put cotton wool in my ears.!
Happy childhood camping.
