May Day May Day May Day

#1 by Sheldonboy , Fri Mar 04, 2011 6:11 am

Some Gov Ministers want May day scrapped and moved to St. Georges day to start holiday seasons off earlier. Or to Trafalgar dy in October to make the season last longer.
The Unions are of course well opposed as May day is Traditionally celebrated by workers in many parts of the world.

It isn't May Day if it isn't on the first of May. May day in England, like most things, predates unions and has nothing whatever to do with them, It's a traditional pagan rite, or something like that, and just the sort of thing that gives us a national personality.

Mayday has always meant different things to different cultures all over the world, it was adopted in the Western hemisphere as International Workers Day or Labour Day at the latter end of the 19th century after a world wide struggle to get the working day reduced to 8 hours. In this country the Tories have tried many times to get rid of it, but are yet to succeed

The people's flag is deepest red,
It shrouded oft our martyred dead,
And ere their limbs grew stiff and cold,
Their hearts' blood dyed its ev'ry fold.

Then raise the scarlet standard high.
Within its shade we'll live and die,
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer,
We'll keep the red flag flying here.

Why not disagreeing at all with your sentiments, Ii can remember, and presumably you also ( unless you are the reverse of the old men trying to pretend they are kids on Facebook!! ) when there was no holiday on Mayday. Then it was "added", except (like the "holiday " on the royal wedding) it isn't an extra day, just forcing you to take part of your holiday on that day. i'm not objecting to that for Mayday, though if i was still working I would over the wedding, but do object to these supposed additions when they are not additions.

Volty

The pagans only adopted or Hijacked it of you insist, from the Roman festival of Flora the Roman Goddess of flowers. Though it might have been the margarine.

Mike

I do indeed remember when there was no bank holiday in Mayday, its not all that long ago.

I'm one of those funny people who don't like bank holidays, I've always said they should scrap them and give folks an extra week off of their choice,
you can't do anything with just a day off, only go to the pub(what's wrong with that) or end up doing something ' er indoors wants doing'.

John

I have to agree with you. but have you noticed though not officially most bank holiday Mondays seemed to have stretched to include the Tuesday as well making it a 4 day weekend.

Personally as someone who works hard most days I would settle for a bank holiday every Monday. SB
