50 m.p.h. Speed Limit

#1 by phil ( deleted ) , Sun Feb 27, 2011 7:53 pm

The government is thinking of introducing a temporary upper speed limit of 50 m.p.h. in response to the looming oil crisis.

That’s fair enough I can foresee the need for drastic measures if things in the East continue along their present course.

Sceptic that I am though I have to wonder if the government don’t just see this as another way of increasing the income of the treasury. Very few drivers pay any attention to the 70 m.p.h. speed limit. What makes them think they will stick to 50 m.p.h.

As you say Phil, enforcing it will be interesting.

Oh I think they will enforce it no problem. For one I don't see them cutting back on the Gatso speed cameras as was proposed.

We had a talk abot speed camera's and they are supposed to be run as a charity organised to cut down on road deaths.
They are self financing from the fines.
The Government say that they can't afford them that's a load of Bull.

There's no need to go faster than 50mph anyway in my view.
At 70mph all you end up doing is getting to the next traffic jam a few seconds earlier.
The yanks have had a speed cap for donkey's years and they have much greater potential distances to travel.

Volty

I agree with you but I think the speed limit should remain at 70.m.p.h. and not kept at 50.m.p.h. after this proposed temporary limit (if it does come). The thing is I have very rarely touched the speed limit and I have never received a ticket or summons for speeding. I always allow plenty of time to get anywhere and allow extra for any eventuality, consequently I have never been late for an appointment or meeting in my life.

I rarely allow enough time to get where I am going so I know of what I speak when I say that driving faster doesn't make a scrap of difference when you are late.

What I hate is when I am driving within the speed limit of 30 m.p.h. and I get some old buffer behind me in an open topped sports car tooting his horn like mad and weaving in and out trying to get around me. Perhaps it's the obligatory bimbo a third of his age sitting beside him that I am jealous about (I think not).

Anyone can drive like a Zombie on Speed, as long as it's not their kid being scraped up by the Fire Service. it's OK them thinking it'll never happen to me. Unfortunately it happens to someone every day.

My son has this theory that speeders should be sent out to help clear up after fatal crashes as part of their punishment. He says that it would be a while before they put their foot down again.

You don't think that would offend their human rights.

I hate the word Celebrity used for such people. When someone has been out with a footballer or been on telly once, they are suddenly a Celebrity. What absolute rubbish. A celebrity should be someone who is Celebrated. Not some foul mouthed, over made up bimbo who had three kids by the time she was Fifteen. SB.
