My pepper pot is a mix of white and black ground pepper, allegedly they taste the same and white is best for things where black would look like contamination, I just prefer a mix.
My grinder is black only.

I totally dispute the idea that black and white pepper taste the same.

I prefer white pepper, or my mix, on baked beans and soups and such things. Freshly ground black peppercorns are for steaks and gravy.
Black pepper just doesn't look good on many foods because it looks like grit or contamination.
The easy way to find out is to taste them blindfolded.
If it wasn't for the visual effect I'm not convinced I could tell them apart. It is something to test out.

Green, Black and White all grow on the same vine.
Green is picked unripe and Black is picked ripe.
White is the black with the outer husk removed.

So as they are produced in different conditions they are therefore different in taste.

Just as Green and Black olives have a different taste so do green and black peppercorns.
The white peppercorn is still basically Black so the taste difference isn't so noticeable to some people.
I mix black and white ground peppers in the table shaker, I'll bet cafes, etc, do the same.
