If the younger players knew that there were places to fight for they may do just that. If they think all the old pals are always going to get in why should they bother. As a non football fan that's how I see it. Who knows it may even make people like me watch the game.

Exactly if some them were given a chance, it might do the older ones good knowing that there place is not permernant.
