Chilean Miners

#1 by Voltman , Tue Oct 05, 2010 11:24 am

OK, so it wasn't the biggest thing in the news today but I can't believe we haven't already started a thread for this.
The drilling to rescue the miners has been moving on apace and they are already ¾ of the way there.

See these pages for an update and see how they are coping underground, their ingenuity has surprised me.

You are right, and I had lost track of the story. There again if we comprehensively covered every news story, then we might as well nick out and buy a newspaper.

It wasn't the biggest news story, but in terms of effort and ingenuity it is bigger that most. It is a shame that , if the same sort of thing thing happens in this country in 20 years time we will probably have to import german engineers to do the job, as our college output will have concentrated on subjects such as sports science and teaching financial fiddling, rather than anything important.

Mike

Why would they teach mining as an engineering course in this country. We don't have an industry in that field any longer.

The aim of the politicians is that we don't have any industry at all, not just in that field. "The future is in invisibles" is the cry,and that is what should be taught; not dirty practical things, but things of the mind - accountancy, fraud, adjustments, monetary vehicles, intellectual rights, politics, faith, religion .

You're quite right mikejee, but even when we are all sitting at home thinking our way to health, happiness and maybe a small fortune, we are still going to need some grunt to make the computers and telephones and lights work. Toilets and drains won't unblock themselves with just the power of thought. Well actually they do but not everyone is able to do it. Fires will still rage out of control in pubs and on piers.
So who is the grunt going to be? He won't be a product of our education system but his social welfare and psyche will be well cared for here.

Very true Volty, among all these geniuses we are still going to need people who are not afraid to get their hands dirty and can do something more than expound a theory or do more with their hands than prepare a Big Mac and mouth the words "have a nice day". I can't see any of Cameron's crowd out digging a ditch for a new sewer for them all to disappear down when it all goes down the tubes.

I 'm not sure whether my point came over very well. I hope you didn't think I believe all that rubbish that's spouted by politicians. I am completely in agreement with with you

Mike

I am in complete agreement with you and one thing I am firmly convinced of and that is all politicians spout rubbish. In fact I know several who have got doctorates in garbage.

If Politicians spoke so that you could understand them. The public would know what they were up to. This is not good for business, as it's the politicians, lying ways that get's them through from one election to another.
This being the case when they are nearing an election, the lying control is turned up a couple of notches. Our political masters then hope that their lies are buried behind possibly bigger lies and deceit from their opponents.
If they are duly elected the lies that they told to get their win announced by the returning officer will then be discarded, to be replaced by new issues that hadn't been mentioned before the election. These new measures are of course for our own good.
You will without a doubt realise that a higher fuel tax is for the nations own good and applaud it. The party in opposition will greatly condemn it and when they return to power increase it again as it was such a good idea to increase this in the first place.
Our Prime Minister will take us to war lying about the reasons. The opposition will call him a warmonger and demand our Troops be brought home. But when the opposition return to power they send more Troops to fight and keep them there for another four years.
We must of course always agree with our political masters, whose wages (by the way) we all pay for, who we put into office and we all love dearly.
Tell me if you have lost track of this yet, I am not sure if I am lying or not. Most of this has actually happened in recent years. I don't think I am lying. SB

Mike, I understood you perfectly, it must have been my use of the word "But" instead of "And" that changed the tone of my post.

I think you are absolutely right old boy.
But listening to many people around and about, it's just what a lot of people actually think.

The latest news, rescue could come as early as next week.
Some of these men are set to make a small fortune (to them) by selling their stories to the media. good luck to them I say.
