This looks like a signalling or switching fault, either mechanical or human. I would say that the modern interior design of the carriages kept the deaths and injuries down. Or maybe it wasn't a very full train.

Saw something on the news about a train struck by lightening ,didnt get where it was though.

I believe they were both supposed to be on the same track, but the goods train should have been well ahead of the passenger train. Lightning struck a section of track and disrupted the signals that would have held the pasenger train back.
