Two recent finds down here in the last couple of days, 4 gold and siver coins 124bc, and a silver sword scabbard.

Nicholas,
I believe this could be the place for posting your pics of mystery objects.
There's nothing we like more in these parts than to try and work out what or where something is or was.
Just between you and I, some of our members can remember back to the times when many of these items got lost or buried.

No names mentioned, eh Voltman??? Laugh, laugh!!!

It's all being kept secret Nick, the only thing I can add is the coins were found at Pulborough and the scabbard at Chichester.

I went to a talk on the staffordshire hoard.............the guy said when it was first found they contacted the police to help with security while they dug it all out...they asked the police to be discreet.they said they would be and turned up with several police cars and a helicopter flying round LOL.

That sounds like our entire WM police force.

Fully understandable SignMan...... A lot of the people we detect for insist on us not telling anyone (not that we would) for fear of trespassers, etc. I think that some believe they have the next gold hoard on their land, to be honest, so they always look a little crestfallen when we show them the buttons, buckles and odd coppers we find on their land!!! Laugh, laugh!!!!

The more police the better, I'd imagine with such a find!! Laugh!!!

Having dealings with the Police on a community level, over quite a few years I can tell you that the police are very good at turning out in numbers for anything high profile. Anything that can show them in a good light and they will be there by the coach load. They will then tell you exactly what you want to hear and go away and do nothing. SB

Below - my mate John recently discovered a fragment of a Bronze Age axe head (as identified by the Portable Antiquities Scheme) and my best, recent find, a George III Silver Shilling from 1817.

All the best,

Nick

Nicholas, did you see Antiques Roadshow on the BBC Sunday night?
A metal detectorist accidentally found a medieval gold and uncut diamond ring whilst walking back to the car.
I think it was valued at £40,000.
