Ordering Birth, Marriage or Death Certificates:

The General Register office in Stockport
GRO Web Link to order certificates on line:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certif...rder-online.asp

Applications for a copy certificate of a birth, death or marriage from the GRO can be made online. The cost of copy certificates £11 and cost more than applications for certificates to the local registry offices.

If the exact date of the event you require the certificate for is not known a search of the GRO indexes may be made for a period of up to five years.

Information you should try to provide when applying for a certificate:
Births: Childs full name, date and place of birth and parents names including mother’s maiden name if possible and father’s occupation.

Marriage: Full names of Bride and Groom, Name of the church or registry office, names and occupation of bride and grooms father, any known addresses.

Death: Full name of Deceased, date and place of death, age of the deceased, their address, occupation, spouses name or if the deceased is a woman her maiden name.

GRO Index Reference Information to supply if known, when ordering a certificate

The information required to order a certificate copy with the index reference from the general registrar’s office is:
Year, quarter, surname, forename, registration district, volume and page numbers

However the information contained in the index is limited and may not be distinctive enough to ensure that you are ordering the correct certificate for the person you are seeking. It may therefore be prudent to offer as much relevant additional family information with your application to assist the staff issuing the certificate to ensure that it is the right one.
