Laurel And Hardy At The Bartons Arms

#1 by astoness , Sun Aug 01, 2010 6:19 pm

hi all...took a couple of hours out yesterday to visit the bartons arms pub..high st newtown....the laurel and hardy appreciation society had arranged for 2 look alikes to hand over a lovely framed pic of L AN H when they stayed at the bartons in may 1954 while appearing at the ajacent aston hippodrome....thought you may like to see a couple of the pics i took...oh i did get meself into a fine mess when i went up to this man and asked him if he was the gaffer and did he know he was standing a pile of minton tiles that were protected underneath the new floor covering..he answered yes and we had a chat about the tiles..anyhow it wasnt until later on that i was told that the guy was not only the owner of oakham ales but also owned the bartons arms and had travelled down from peterbough for the event..i only thought he was the landlord...

pic 1 is paul hook owner of the pub...hes the one in the middle..lol

Froth did mention it, but by that time it was to late to come over.
Maybe they will do it again in the future.

Well just looking at those pics was a lot of fun. Thanks for that Astoness.

I am not a member of that society but I was at the Laurel and Hardy show. I went on my own and saw them arrive in their taxi while I was queuing outside. I remember that they did the haunted house sketch where, while one is in the bed and the other turns his back, the bed flips around into the wall. In later life people probably thought I was making it up until a few years ago a biography was published giving details of the show.
When I have had a bit too much to drink, I will tell people that I saw Laurel and Hardy and my mom saw Buffalo Bill. She saw his parade going down Wheeler Street when she was a girl.
