Asylum Records

#1 by Maggs , Tue Aug 25, 2015 7:14 pm

First I have to thank a couple of Forum users for putting me on the right path to make this post. They know who they are! xx Now, although it may be a long shot my query is this.... Is it possible to obtain (free of charge) any patient records for 1924/25 to approx. late December 1939, from Hatton Asylum? That was the original name but it changed in 1925 to Erdington House and then later to Highcroft. I would be very grateful for any help offered to tie up loose ends of a family tree. Many thanks all.

Hi Maggs, maybe you should contact Highcroft and ask where the old records are kept, it could be the Central Library.

The National Archive says that the Highcroft records are at The Birmingham Archives and Heritage Service but the list of records isn't impressive.

The Birmingham Archives are in The Library of Birmingham You can search their catalogues on-line and make an appointment to view.

What I don't see is any reference to Hatton Asylum .
I was under the impression that was on the Warwick Road at Hatton. http://www.hattonpark.net/history
If this is the place in question then you will need the Warwickshire County Record Office

Thank you all for the input. Yes Voltman, I thought the same about Hatton but then I read a history on line which stated it was the original name for Highcroft. (All very confusing!) but I shall take up advice offered and see where it leads me. Thank you all again.

A lot of modern records have a 100 year closure on them

Not everything we read on-line is correct Maggs.

In this instance I think Highcroft in 1939 is so well documented that the record would clearly show if it had ever been called Hatton.
Before being called Erdington House, in 1912, it was Aston Union Workhouse which was opened in 1869 over the road from Erdington Cottage Homes
We have a thread that for this at Erdington Cottage Homes

Hello everyone. Not been posting because of a holiday in Llandudno but I am determined to get to the bottom of my original query and with all the help you have offered I just know it will lead to something. Once this puzzle is done and dusted I shall be picking your brains on lots of stuff! Thanks everyone. x
