Bizarre Suggestion

#1 by mikejee , Mon Jun 01, 2015 12:11 pm

I know this is not Birmingham, but it must be one of the most strange posts I have ever seen on my local forum, yet he seems to not be pulling our legs. It has caused some amusement, and a touch of horror, while others have , understandably, queried the economics, The first post reads:
I am offering the people of Reading, Teeth Brushing Services. I will brush and floss peoples teeth for as long as they like (about 10 mins suggested as max). They will receive a FREE TOOTHBRUSH. I will get their teeth pearly white and free of plaque. The brushing and flossing will take place in Reading Town Centre. INTRUDUCTORY OFFER of £1.50 for the brushing and flossing. For more information and bookings please email me at:

Seems reasonable making around £30 per hour. If he had any spare time he could offer a similar cleaning service in the loo;[Bored]

But you've forgotten the free toothbrush he claims will be given.

At 10 mins per sitting that's only six sittings per hour, which is probably the maximum, allowing for customer movements but assuming a constant flow of customers.
6 x £1.50 is £9.

Be generous, and assume the whole of Reading are incapable of brushing their own teeth, then you could argue that he will get £18 per hour.
I think that £4.50 per hour is more likely.

As this is an introductory offer he doesn't need to make a living at it but he will have overheads.
Firstly the free toothbrush, which is of course the cheap one he uses on the customer.
Then there is toothpaste, floss and surgical gloves.
He would need Public Liability Insurance.
Wherever he operates from he will likely have to pay for the facility.

In any case the claim about teeth becoming "pearly white proves he is an idiot. Would you want to let an unknown idiot loose in your mouth?
The price has now gone up to £2.

This forum is not known to have unknown idiots.

I did not put a link on the forum (though I can provide it if anyone is interested in peculiarities), but he claimed he would not have premises but do it in the street and had investigated it and "confirmed" that he did not need public liability insurance (if any firm was stupid enough to give it to him) . He also claimed that he would use rubber gloves - so that would be ok!!
