Smith Street, Hockley

A few pics of Smith Street, Hockley…I was hoping to find one of the Malt Shovel at No.103
and I have asked for Mikes help on this. By 1955 the pub had been demolished and the
ground took over… First 2 are of the same building taken at different times…
on the opposite corner you can just see a bit of the Queens Head pub.

Smith Street at Harford Street , also showing Smith Street school…
The Malt Shovel pub was this side of the school and as you can see it's no longer there.

I am just looking at my own old Godfrey map of 1913 and that building shows quite clearly.

I have a couple of points to raise regarding the first two photos in post No.1

Why does the road sign in both shots say "Smith Tree" despite the shots being taken a different times?
Why is it black with white lettering?
What is the name of the road in which the photo is taken from?

hi volty....the really old cast iron street signs were white on black background as a rule

just a couple of letters missing from the word street and were not replaced..

caption does not say what street pic was taken from so then we have to look for clues ..we know we can just see the edge of the queens head pub on the opposite corner so a kellys look up will solve that one...think it must be taken from either hockley or well st...

The picture of the shop with signs on side must have been the one on the corner of
Hockley St/Smith St as marked in red on map, as this is the only corner with a narrow
building on the right of the shop followed by an entry

I can believe that Mike, What threw me is that Hockley Steet / Smith Street is now a T junction whereas in the old map it is a crossroads, so I was looking for a road that passed across, or through, Smith Street as in the photo.

Yes, unlike some streets, at least it did not disappear completely

I really don't like it when streets disappear. Buildings I can accept, they need maintenance to survive, but roads would survive forever.
Some appear to have been lost to private concerns, which makes it even harder to accept.

many streets have gone now volty..most during the 60s..the street were i was born paddington st being one of the many..luckily i have managed to find old photos of it...
