I remember going to the gasworks in the 60s
to load up the wagon with coke

I notice the National Grid person says they are giving the land back to the developers.Yet it never belonged to the developers in the first palce. In fact
The land in most cases belonged to the councils who owned the gas companies until they were taken into national ownership to be given away to Thatcher's
corrupt friends

well they have been part of the landscape for many years but i dont think anyone will miss them..

I remember walking to new john street west,hockley on a saturday morning with my sister pushing an old pram toget 56 or 28 pounds of coke ,coal was very scarce in the early 50s ,then pushing it back up hunters road hill ,made us sweat but mom said it would help keep the fire in ,to keep us warm.

It .use to be brought to the coal yard from saltley gas works ,if I am right a firm called alexander comley use to deliver it.
