I'm not sure that I would agree that they were entirely innocent. Its a slippery slope with the snakeoil-salesmen-lawyers that are around today. I can just see some slimy QC using that sort of argument to get some drug peddler off after killing someone because the drugs were far stronger than the usual ones he sold and he didn't realise, and the usual sort had never killed anyone
They certainly didn't do her any good but it could well be that she was already seriously ill. Modern medicine would presumably come up with something more believable than "frightened to death".
