They are like holiday camps so ive been told

Buy the look of what I just read the open prison system is a licence to walk out whenever you feel like it ,ridiclous.

I understood that these places were for people who's crimes were not too serious. Some of these boyo's were murderers etc.

I thought they were only low risk inmates that went to open prisons.

I think the original idea was that "low risk " offenders went there. This often meant financiers who had caused the ruin of hundreds and thousands of people, often resulting in suicide or despair, but had not actually stuck a knife in anyone. Now it seems that if you have stuck several knives in people, but are towards the end of your sentence then that is the place to go. They are probably both just as undesirable, but personally I think neither should have an easy time

I'm not in the least bit scared of sharks in suits, no matter how many greedy and gullible people they have bankrupted. Murderous thugs who fear nothing are different matter.

Surely their processes needed tightening up the day the first prisoner 'escaped' aka walked out!

I would guess that nowadays "escape" would not be an accepted term of use; possibly "unregulated access to outside area", or some such phrase , would be the usual term used in the service

What happens if they hurt themselves while they are out on walkabout?
Can they sue the prison service?

Probably for around two million quid I would guess
