When I started at the Chestnuts all Barmen had to wear Barmens jackets, Black trouser and shoes and collar and tie.
These days most pubs have a cleaner. We had six. One for each of the rooms, and a spare to cover days off and holidays, one for the Gaffers flat and the popman who also did the Gents toilet and swept the car parks everyday.

The original building was a prefabricated single story affair, with the bar at one end, the outdoor in the middle (serviced from the bar) and the lounge/snug at the other end (just like the Cabin was, on the Radleys roundabout). Sheldon Heath Road and the Radleys originally had lots of prefabricated bungalows. We moved into the area in 1952, living just opposite the Chestnuts in Hollyfaste Road. My dad was a regular in the bar at the weekends.

The actual Chestnut tree was in the car park on The corner facing the traffic island and There was a really nice willow tree facing Garretts Green Lane on the lawn outside The Willows Lounge. Sad loss of a once great pub.
