I would have preferred anything apart from a game for 2 with one player.

Just rotate the board and try to beat yourself.

That's very easy to say but not so easy to do especially when you've never seen a chess board at the age of 7

My first chess set was made of wood, I still have it.
I had to use the draughts board that came in my compendium set.

being one of 6 children money was short as was it with most families but we always had a little sack of bits and bobs and main present but nothing as expensive as a new bike or the likes..in fact i cant ever remember any of us having one..our dad used to make our go carts himself from a plank of wood 4 old pram wheels and some rope...we had things like colouring books and crayons....maybe a small doll for us girls..touches for the lads and a new annual every year..oh always a stocking at the end of the bed...one year i had a small metal working sewing machine and another year a pair of rollar skates as a main present..loved making the paper chains and putting up the christmas tree..christmas dinner round the table in the back room and listening to the queens speech and the coal fires in both rooms going full belt(usually the only coal fire we had going was in the front living room but as the back room was large enough to sit us all round the table to have the fire going in there was a treat)...may not seem a lot but boy did we love this time of year...dont know how our mom and dad managed it but i suspect with a little help from the provey man and another club call blundells who had a shop on the soho road...3 of us shared the attic and we would lay awake on christmas eve waiting for our dad who was trying to be as quiet as he could bring up our sacks but he couldnt fool us lol and as soon as he was out of ear shot up we would get and open our presents..scoff a bit of choccie that was always in our stockings and then go back to sleep...always be grateful to mom and dad for giving us what they could and making christmas so special..like i said we may not have had a lot but their love for us well made up for that..its something you cant buy and i do know that other children were not so lucky as us and had very miserable times at christmas so thank you mom and dad..god bless you both..
