I'm not very well up on prices of building plots at the moment, but I would think £2,000,000 is slightly overpriced for a bit of parkland.

I may be a bit out Phil but I don't think so. Also wer'e not just talking about the value of the land, they also want no opposition. The money paid is supposed to benefit the Oaklands, we'll see. On the other side of the Oaklands on the Hobmoor Road side a Junior School has been built.
Closer to where I live on the Meadway five blocks of flats have been demolished. to be replaced by housing. To pay for the demolition of these blocks part of the Kents Moat Park has had to be taken.
None of this is new, it's happening everywhere.
A tactic I have witnessed is when our Lords and Masters want to carry out a large job, instead of coming up with a plan and then having to fight off massive objections. What they do now is come up with the plan that they want and then come up with two other outlandish plans that the public would never agree on. Then they hold public meetings and hold a vote on the options. The public of course vote for the option that the council want.
One thing I have found is that it's very difficult to get City Planning Officers to public meetings. They appear to be a law unto themselves.
I would be surprised Phil if you havn't got one or two horror stories. SB

I have worked for several councils in the midlands, I have also worked for the government (Health Authorities). I could tell you stories that would make your hair curl. The public money that is wasted and other things that occur are unbelievable. I have no intention of going in to detail, but if you think that some of the things that get into the newspapers are anywhere near all of what goes on then you are way out.

I see evidence of what Phils says about the waste of public money every day.
Useless, as in incompetent, contractors getting good contracts at the lowest tender price then performing in a manner to match their low prices. They get paid for unfinished or incorrect works and then someone else, with a bit of pride and skill, is asked to go in and put things right. The tax and rate payer pays twice.
The councils have to use them because of their own rules about spreading the work about and getting the best price, not necessarily the best value.
I don't need to say which side of the equation I am on, I sleep well at night and see the payment as a tax refund.

But it goes far deeper than shoddy work by contractors being rectified by competent contractors who should have got the work in the first place.
Such as government and councils having their own works and engineering departments and then contracting out any job more complicated than changing a light bulb.

Sixty minutes in one hour, Hero, perhaps you mean 40 (Forty) minutes past two?
This would be twenty minutes to three in the way we say it.
