Our Memories Of Growing Up

Hi folks this is the place to be for posting our memories of growing up..talk about anything...days at school..Christmas time..bonfire nights..the houses we lived in and how we had to make to and mend...games we we played and things that we got up to that our parents didn't know aboutthings our parents did to save a bob or two.....I've got a few tales to tell on that score basically just chat about the old days.. I'm a tad busy at the min as I'm off to Cornwall tomorrow for a few days but when I get back I will be adding my memories to this thread...so it's over to you folks oh and please post any photos you have of yourselves as kids

Not being sure when I actually grew up, and not being sure if I ever did, I will have to give this some thought.

One memory I have was as a child going down to our local pub on Sunday lunchtime. The Chestnuts (so called because it was on the Chestnuts Estate) was a prefab/a shack. with a lean to piece on the front to take you to a trap window which was the out-door. In those days of the late 1950s early 1960s children were absolutely taboo in pubs even the landlords kids kept out of the way.
We used to take the empty beer bottles back for the 3d deposit on each of them and the pop bottles all raised our pocket money. now we could do this on any day of course but Sunday was special because the man used to be there with his big wooden barrow selling Toffee Apples and trust me they were fantastic. Great memories there SB which brings to mind the money off the bottles..more or less opposite our house in Villa St was the Vine Inn..undercover of darkness one of us kids would get a bunk up over the pubs side wall into the yard and then pass some empties over the wall...then we would take them to the Vines outdoor and get the money back off them oh happy days..

no SB..but that also brings to mind our apple tree in the back garden...must have climbed it a thousand times but this one day when decending the said apple tree me navy blue school knickers somehow got caught on a branch and i was left there hanging [Laugh Out Loud] i was always a tom boy..anything the lads could do i had to do as well..

Well I am amazed, I can only say that the quality of the elastic and the standard of the cotton must have been very good.

god this is so embarassing our kid who was on another branch kind of lifted me up to slacken the knickers and i sort of edged my way to the end of the branch...now the world and his wife knows all this [Laugh Out Loud]

I think we should all study Video evidence of this. Were the Apples still fit to eat I wonder.

Something I have done many times in the 1960s was train spotting on Snow Hill station. Although Saturdays was reasonably quiet it was such a great place. The blue pullman used to come in from the Wolverhampton end. The express trains came in pulled by the sleek western diesels.
Then we would buy a fruit pie in a box, they were really nice. The steam engines were of course still running and we were allowed on the footplate by some drivers. I even had bacon sarnies cooked on the shovel. As a kid times like that should last forever.

Whilst you can't eat crabapples, they do make excellent missiles.
I used to cut a long stick from a tree and trim it to a point at the thin end. Then stick a crab apple on the point and wang the apple as far as possible.
They went way further than I could throw one and as I had a cricket field to play in there was no worry about lack of space.
