I knew lots of HGV owners who ran their lorries on paraffin oil and who could blame them at a fraction of the cost of diesel. In fact as paraffin runs cleaner than diesel it wasn't unknown for owners to fill up with paraffin before a test if their engine was running a bit smokey.
Then there were those who ran on duty free red diesel (lots of diesel cars do today) it costs about half the price of road diesel, but it's supposed to be used for off the road plant and vehicles only.
You might ask why everybody doesn't do it on a regular basis, it's simple Customs & Excise do regular spot checks in places known to be used by lots of HGV's. The fines are tremendous and it's not unknown for vehicles to be confiscated and scrapped. Though I have to mention I have never saw a car being checked.
