You don't have to go to china. I can't see why anyone would want to eat legs that have been pulled off frogs while they are alive. Anyway, i did taste them once (before I knew how they were harvested) and all i could taste was garlic & butter. Much better a good baked potato with lots of butter .
The range of things put into processed food (I am talking about legally) is much more restricted because of regulations . I remember a friend of mine many (over 30) years ago who worked for a time at a Walls sausage factory, and he never ate Walls sausages.
I remember someone who worked for the food division at Cadbury's just after they took over Typhoo . Apparently in the old firm pre-takeover the teabags could be divided into 4 grades:
1. Special ones made with very high quality tea
2.Ones made from ordinary grade tea
3. Cheap economy ones made from tea dust and old tea
4 Catering tea bags, made from floor sweepings etc
I will add that the last grade disappeared immediately after the takeover and catering bags were after that the third grade.
The Meet the Midwife program mentioned that chalk was added during and immediately after the war to fill out and whiten bread, so you are probably aware of that. But you may not be aware that this happened with a great deal of bread in the nineteenth century, but was banned, only to reappear in the 1940s..
